Welcome

From our Head of Junior School

From our Head of Junior School

Earlier this term, I was privileged to be involved in an Adventist Education conference in Adelaide that had a focus on flourishing school environments. Being my first visit to Adelaide, I was anticipating the new experience as well as the opportunity to engage in professional conversation and reflection on what we do at Hills Adventist College, as well as what other Adventist Schools in the South Pacific do.

One of the keynotes that stood out to me, because I would consider myself a visual learner, was the concept of the wood wide web as shown through the image below.

To support a flourishing environment, we need to be connectedโ€”just like trees. As Peter Wohlleben explains, underground, trees are linked through an intricate root system. When one tree is struggling, the others send nutrients and support through those roots to help it not just survive but thrive.

This beautiful image mirrors the kind of school community we strive to create. To be deeply connectedโ€”supporting one another, sharing our strengths, and lifting each other up when challenges arise. Itโ€™s through these connections that we all grow stronger. Just like a healthy forest, a flourishing school is one where no one stands alone.

As we continue our journey together, may we nurture these connections and remain committed to building a Christ-centred community where every student, teacher, and family can truly flourish.

Blessings,
Daniel Marsden

Chaplains Corner

Chaplains Corner

One of the funnier parts of being a chaplain is how often our student gatherings revolve around food.

Whether itโ€™s Bible study, chapel planning, or band practice for Week of Worship, thereโ€™s always something to eat. Weโ€™ve become so well known for it that students will wander into the office and ask, โ€œGot any food?โ€ While we try to save it for actual events, I have to laugh at how naturally young people gather when foodโ€™s involved.

Interestingly, a lot of Jesusโ€™ ministry happened the same way. As Robert Karris says:

โ€œIn Lukeโ€™s Gospel, Jesus is either going to a meal, at a meal, or coming from a meal.โ€
( Eating Your Way Through Lukeโ€™s Gospel )

Jesus loved mealsโ€”and encouraged His followers to share them often. In Acts 2:46, we read this about the early church:

โ€œEvery day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.โ€

They werenโ€™t just eatingโ€”they were building community. And it worked. The church grew rapidly during this time.

Modern research shows that meals still play a powerful role in bringing people together, especially families. Here are just a few proven benefits:

For young kids: Dinner conversation boosts vocabulary more than being read to.

For healthy habits: Children who eat with family tend to develop better long-term eating patterns.

For teen wellbeing: Regular family meals are linked to lower rates of risk-taking behaviour.

For mental health: Theyโ€™re associated with fewer symptoms of depression and greater resilience in kids whoโ€™ve faced hardship.

(Source: The Institute of Child Psychology)

If your family isnโ€™t already having regular phone-free meals together, I encourage you to startโ€”just once a week to begin with. Meals draw people closer, and thatโ€™s something Jesus clearly understood.

So this week, be like Jesus. Share a meal with the people closest to you.

God bless,
Pr Josh Stothers

Raise a Cup, Raise Hope

Raise a Cup, Raise Hope

Hills Adventist College recently hosted Australiaโ€™s Biggest Afternoon Tea, joining thousands across the country in raising funds for the Cancer Council. This yearโ€™s event held special significance as it was organised in honour of one of our own staff members currently on a cancer journey.

The afternoon was made even more meaningful when another staff member, Mr Matt Bland, generously donated his hair, which he had been growing for five years, to be made into wigs for cancer patients. The haircut was kindly done by Miss Penny F, mother of student Halle F. It was a powerful act of support, compassion and solidarity that inspired everyone present.

The staffroom was filled with warmth, conversation and plenty of delicious food. A big thank you to The Bakehouse in North Kellyville, who kindly donated a batch of fresh muffins. Many staff also brought in homemade treats, cakes, slices and savoury goodies to share.

Beyond the food, the event was a beautiful reminder of the strength of community and the importance of standing together. We are proud to share that $1,194 was raised, with all funds going towards vital cancer research, prevention and support services.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed, donated or simply came along. And a special thanks to both staff members who inspired us through their courage and generosity. It was a day filled with kindness, connection and hope.

Read Together: NSS 2025

Read Together: NSS 2025

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is a much-loved annual event organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Now in its 25th year, NSS brings together children from all over Australia to read the same picture book at the same time, celebrating storytelling, literacy and Australian childrenโ€™s literature. The event emphasises the importance of reading and aligns with key areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.

This yearโ€™s featured book was The Truck Cat, written by Deborah Frenkel and illustrated by Danny Snell. Selected by a panel of childrenโ€™s literacy experts, the story explores universal themes such as home, migration, loneliness and belonging. It follows Tinka the cat and his human, Yacoub, as they journey together in search of a place that feels like home.

At Hills Adventist College, we marked this special occasion on Wednesday, 21st May by gathering all Junior School students on both campuses to join the nationwide live stream. Alongside more than 2 million children at over 16,000 registered locations across Australia, our students enjoyed hearing the author read The Truck Cat and talk about the inspiration behind the story. They also had the chance to learn how to illustrate their own cat, guided by the bookโ€™s illustrator.

Throughout the week, students continued to explore the bookโ€™s themes and messages during their Library lessons, engaging in discussions and creative activities. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the power of storytelling and the joy of reading together.

Science Incursion

Science Incursion

Year 2 students at Hills Adventist College recently enjoyed an exciting and educational science incursion, presented by the Ranger Science Show Company.

The interactive show brought science to life through hands-on experiments, captivating demonstrations and enthusiastic student participation. With surprising reactions, exciting outcomes and plenty of laughter, students were fully immersed in the wonders of science.

Throughout the session, students explored key concepts such as energy, states of matter and forcesโ€”all delivered in a fun, age-appropriate and engaging way. The presenter struck the perfect balance between education and entertainment, keeping students curious and captivated from start to finish.

These incursions enrich classroom learning by sparking curiosity, encouraging creativity and inspiring a love of discovery. Science became more than just a subjectโ€”it became an experience.

A big thank you to the Ranger Science Show Company for making science so exciting for our Year 2 students. We look forward to many more learning adventures like this in the future!

Junior School Gets Hands-On with STEM

Junior School Gets Hands-On with STEM

This year, Junior School students had a fantastic time during STEM Week, where the focus was simply on having fun with science, technology, engineering, and math!

Without a set theme, our young learners dived into exciting experiments, especially in chemistry and physics, to discover how amazing STEM really is.

Some of the favourites were
๐Ÿซง Making colourful bubbles that floated and shimmered in the sunlight
๐Ÿ’ง Watching water magically stay upside down in a jar, a fun trick that had everyone amazed!

These hands-on activities helped students see how science works all around them and proved that STEM is exciting and for everyone, no matter their age.

A big thank you to our teachers and helpers for making STEM Week so special. Our Junior School kids canโ€™t wait to explore more science adventures soon!

Healthy Lunchbox Assignment

Healthy Lunchbox Assignment

As part of their Healthy Lunchbox assignment, the Year 8 Food Technology students prepared a variety of nutritious and delicious meals. From fresh salads and rice dishes to savoury crepes, the students showcased their creativity and understanding of balanced eating. The project encouraged hands-on learning, with a strong focus on making healthy food both tasty and visually appealingโ€”perfect for the lunchbox! The activity also helped build essential cooking skills, meal planning awareness, and confidence in making healthier food choices every day.

Grand Final Victory

Grand Final Victory

Weโ€™re excited to celebrate the fantastic achievement of our Year 7 to 9 Girlsโ€™ Futsal team, who were crowned Grand Final winners this week in the Hills Zone competition ! ๐Ÿ†

Throughout the semester, these talented students have shown impressive growth in skill, teamwork and confidence. Their commitment to training, resilience on the court and support for one another led to a hard-fought and well-deserved win.

In what was a very competitive match, the girls held their ground with integrity and composure, even when faced with tough challenges from a strong opposing team. Their display of true sportsmanship and teamwork was not only impressive but also a wonderful reflection of our schoolโ€™s values.

We are incredibly proud of this team, not just for the result but for the way they represented our school throughout the Hills Zone tournament. Their effort and attitude have set a brilliant example for others and made a lasting, positive impact on our school community.

Congratulations to our champions! Your hard work has paid off and youโ€™ve made us very proud. ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘

Blending Art + Code: Year 10

Blending Art + Code: Year 10

During Term 2, students from Ms Menziesโ€™ Year 10 Visual Arts class and Mr Aitkenโ€™s Computing class have merged to explore the exciting world of Interactive Art Installationsโ€”a unique fusion of creativity and code. These installations combine visual art with sensors to create works that respond to movement, light, or sound through programmed instructions.

To deepen their understanding and gather inspiration, students attended VIVID Sydney, a world-famous festival celebrating the intersection of art, technology, and innovation. From AI-generated large-scale projection mapping, to interactive light sculptures and immersive digital experiences, the event showcased whatโ€™s possible when creativity meets cutting-edge tech.

This experience is already sparking ideas, with students now working on their own interactive installations, set to be featured in the Creative Collective 2025.
